The department has over 1,000 students, 34 full-time or part-time teachers and 8 majors. It runs three training centers in safety ,mining and geotechnical engineering, one modern simulation mine and one shield technology training field, containing 22 training rooms. It has built up three provincial-level excellent courses in Control Techniques of Coal Mine Disasters, Engineering Blasting and Mine Ventilation. It has two provincial-level teaching teams respectively in majors of coal mining technology and mine ventilation. In 2014, it was honored as Provincial “Yuan Ding Jiang” (Gardener Award) Advanced Group. It has received 1 national second prize for teaching achievement, 1 second prize for teaching achievement in national coal industry, 1provincial first prize and 1 second prize for teaching achievement. Students of the school had won 3 first prizes, several second and third prizes in national vocational college skills competition.
